So I got really good feedback on next year’s theme being based on how to leverage employment.

I’ll be getting started on that soon, but let’s kick things off with the main reason employment can be so valuable in shaping your freelance career.

Marketing.

Not the advertising part…more the fact that employers have gone before you to figure out whether certain types of labor are valued in the market. Here’s an example.

The work I do basically falls under the “technical copywriter” category. You can look that up and easily find salary estimates and job postings. Why? Because employers have tested the waters and decided that there was enough work to create whole jobs around this kind of labor.

When they’ve done the work? You have a MUCH easier time figuring out what you should charge, whether your work is viable, even what services to offer.

So even if you’re not trying to sign up for a W-2 ever again, pay attention to employment. It can be the best thing to happen to your freelance career.
