Hey!
I just had a client ask if they could pay me for 3 months’ worth of work in advance. This wasn’t the first time.
Why? Because they needed to spend up the rest of their budget by year end. (Side note, my coach recommends that I ask all clients at the end of the year if they have budgets they need to burn. It works.)
Maybe I just didn’t have the right kind of job, but I never had an employer offer to pay in advance. (If anything, I was hounding them for late checks).
That’s because freelance money and pay checks? They usually come from very different places in a company’s budget. Which is also why freelancers often get paid so much more than their employed counterparts (it’s not just the lack of benefits).
But that’s how it works. We’re coming is as partners and aren’t asking them for the predictability of a check. (So don’t be scared to raise your rates or ask for more.)
