Hey!
So if we’re talking about freelancing that takes advantage of employment, this is a really strong question.
How long does it take to learn an industry? To get a feel for employment culture? To get to know how these kinds of organizations work?
The general answer is 3-5 years.
In that time you can learn the culture of your niche and hone communication skills so you know what’s it like to interact with a larger organization.
Of course, you can stay a lot longer (I did), but around the 5 year mark, you’ve got a good feel for what kind of services are needed, what employers pay for, and where you can fit in the big picture.
So even if you’re not ready to go full time freelance, it’s a great time to start testing the waters.
And if you’re wondering if you’ve been at it long enough and want more input, swing by the community boards for some feedback.
Talk to you soon!
