There’s a reason for this. I believe that every freelance business needs this kind of perspective more than ever. 

Yes, we’re dealing with more uncertainty, but there’s also more opportunity out here for indie workers than there ever has been in history—and you don’t take advantage of that just hoping your business works out for the best. 

So make some space to close out 2022 by reshaping your mindset—a mindset that will help you take advantage of 2023 and all the options you have in front of you as a freelancer. 

This month we’re covering the responsibilities of the Chief Operating Officer, or COO. You’re going to want to keep up with this once since it’s so much more than placing ads.  

Production

Since you’re a one-person business, you’re COO, but also getting the actual work done.  

COOs are in charge of business operations...the day-to-day functioning, so you’re doing double duty.  

Keep this in mind as you work. Sometimes, understanding that production is its own responsibility can help you keep a healthy perspective and boundaries with other duties like marketing and strategy. In other words, when it’s time to get work done, get work done...don’t worry about things like sales, collecting on invoices, and even answering email.  

That focus and delineation might be your most important duty as COO.
