Hope your March is off to a good start!
Last month, we covered responses to chaotic times from a mindset perspective. This month, we’re looking at specific skills.
These are the skills you’ll be using to find stability and even advantage during times of
change and uncertainty. They’ll overlap a bit with last month, since they’re extensions of the perspective you need to not just survive but thrive during times like these (which I genuinely believe is possible.)
The beauty of these is that they also apply to employment (as the world gets less stable, employment and freelancing tend to start to merge and look more similar).
Here’s what we’ll be covering:
- Focus
- Applying Systems
- Listening
- Collaboration
Focus more than ever
Freelancing always requires focus, but now, it’s simply not an option.
I talked last week about avoiding people and companies who lean too deeply into speculation, and the flip side of that is focusing on stability.
The hard part is that a lot of the traditional recommendations have been turned inside out. (Government as a sector, for example, is highly unstable right now because of the authoritarian forces moving in the current administration.)
This means you might need to think a bit differently. For example. I’m in healthcare and threats
to Medicaid are causing a lot of expected instability. In response, I’m looking at companies that are based outside the US or have an international presence.
The same goes for industries like education, food, and even government. Federal might be up for grabs but your state and local governments might be completely different. Keep an ear out for people who say they haven’t seen much change or
aren’t experiencing many pains. You’ll likely find some good guidance with them.
