Hey!
So I’ve talked about how important my network’s been over the last year and a half or so of chaos in my niche and changes in my business.
The thing is…I think that’s only true because it’s highly curated.
There’s a potential pitfall in networking as a freelancer…people can waste a TON of time and effort on networking that’s just spinning your
wheels doing things that feel like business…things like “coffee chats” and just venting about frustrations.
Those things are important but often don’t add immediate practical value to your business.
…and in times like these, most of us need to be focused on immediate, practical value.
So, it might
be time for a change.
That doesn’t mean cutting people off, being purely transactional, or ignoring anyone, but it should mean boundaries.
Think setting aside a specified amount of time per week or month for networking. Think having a clear set of requirements so you know there’s mutual value on the table (e.g. similar industries, skill sets, or business goals).
Think deciding the topics you want to focus on and outcomes you want to see from the relationship.
Track those in a CRM (I prefer HubSpot), follow up, and let things fall by the wayside if they aren’t working.
All of this is much easier when you’ve done a little work to clarify your business goals and strategies. You can get started on that here.
