I really...don’t like April Fool’s Day

Hi

April 1st (a really weird holiday observed in parts of North America and Europe) is one of the rare days I straight up avoid the Internet.

For some reason, as skeptical as I can be, and even though I know exactly what day it is, I still manage to fall for some April Fool’s Day article. (This year, I thought it was the one about Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje being a skinhead, but that turned out to be true.)

I know I’m not the only one…I saw quite a few other people talking about their dislike for the day, largely for the same reason. That let me know though, that a lot of people who create April Fool’s Day content just don’t really get what connects with their readers in positive ways.

This month is website month at BlackFreelance, and our BlackFreelance Academy members are going to be focusing on incorporating effective messaging into their websites. One of the key components of effective messaging, is understanding what your visitors like and dislike, which is why this week’s tip is…

Work to know your client base.

This means subscribing to (and reading) the newsletters, trade journals, Facebook pages, and podcasts that they do. It means following their news, and it means listening when they speak. If you can get this one simple tip down, you’ll have one of the most crucial pieces of the freelance puzzle in place.
