Especially when you’re first starting out, it’s easy to see clients as just…well…clients.
The truth is though, that some clients are worth much, much more than others, and sometimes, that can be hard to tell. That’s why this week’s freelance tip is.
Know the dollar value of each of your clients.
That can be difficult to do,
which is why for the challenge this week, everybody in the Academy is working on taking their lists and putting a number to each client.
If you want to do the same, just estimate how much you think each of your clients is worth over a year’s time…you might be surprised at what you see.
It’s easy to get caught up in how much fun a project is or how much we like a client — those things are important for sure, but you’re building a business, and
money matters. Checking in to see how much each of your clients is generating helps you figure out where to focus your efforts in building your ideal freelance career.

P.S. Some news broke online that Blavity doesn’t pay its writers. That (really messed up) piece of information got me thinking about what it means to be a freelancer, and how many companies and industries take advantage of us. I put my thoughts together
in this piece, which has gotten great feedback so far. Check it out, and let me know what you think!
