Your timing matters…

Hi

I got into a little discussion on Twitter this week about the importance of timing.

It’s a concept we all seem to get when it comes to relationships, investing, even just going out to eat. The thing is, timing also matters in freelancing, and it matters a lot.

If you’re paying attention, you’ll see platforms like Upwork and LinkedIn giving preference to freelancers who are already established (Upwork for example, now charges more for the smaller projects where most new freelancers get their start.) The same goes for individual clients — every day you’re not freelancing or focusing on a niche, someone else is building a longer, better-established career where they can really prove to a client why they’re a better choice.

There is no reason you should be left behind here. That’s why this week’s freelance tip is…

Know it’s not always ok to wait.

I’m not saying you have to build a massive website or start pitching to Microsoft as a client next week. Not at all. What I am saying, is that if you’re putting off creating a profile on a bidding site, or deciding on a niche, or picking one freelance skillset to focus on, know that you’re not shorting anyone but your future self.

The great thing though, is you can turn that all around right now by making a decision to be proactive.

Megan.
