Like I said last week, I don’t do resolutions.
I’ve found, that across my freelance career, simple decisions have been much more effective. I’m not talking about anything big here. For example, a few months back, I wanted to start getting in better shape. Instead of setting a goal to lose 10 lbs in 2 months or following every Instagram #fitspo account I could find, I did something simple.
I
just decided to go to the gym 4 days a week.
Not be there for an hour, not go through some really involved plan. Just show up, 4 days a week. If I got there and didn’t want to do anything more than walk on the treadmill for 10 minutes, that was fine. Even if I only put on my clothes and drove to the parking lot, I was allowed to turn around and leave whenever I wanted.
That never happened though. I’ve always done
something.
4 months later and I’ve only missed a couple of days and it doesn’t feel like a burden at all. That’s because the commitment I’ve made is easy, and chances are, once I’m there, I’ll do something.
That’s why this year, I want you to set aside 30 minutes a week where you sit down in front of a computer and work on your freelance business. I mean put it on your calendar, with a reminder, for the whole year. It could be
taking a class to build your skills or building your prospect/pitch list. It doesn’t matter. (If you need ideas on what to do,
check out the list here for ideas.)
Once you’re comfortable, you can increase that time, but for now, start simple and see how far it will take
you.
Megan.
