A few weeks ago, I saw some folks on the timeline saying that
they were having huge gaps in their freelance income…weeks, a whole month…even 3 months! That REALLY took me by surprise, because while I know freelancing comes with bumps, gaps like that shouldn’t be normal, let alone widespread. I had a hunch, so I set up a little Twitter survey.
You can check it
out here, but it was basically just asking people how often they marketed…daily, weekly, monthly, or when they ran low on business. The majority…40% chose the 4
th option, “When my work runs low”…40%!
That’s a HUGE problem. (I know Twitter isn’t the most scientific source, but I’m inclined to believe there’s some truth there.)
It illuminates something I think more freelancers need to accept -- No matter how good you are, freelance
work won’t come to you. You can though, make your life much easier. Ideally, you should have a constant flow of work from which you choose the projects that fit your financial and career needs.
That might not sound possible, but it is…if you make marketing a habit.
Bare minimum you should be out there weekly. When you first start, daily is ideal. If you don’t know how to start that,
check out this post on how to start your freelance career ASAP (especially the first 2 steps)…and as always, if you’ve got any questions, shoot me an email. Talk soon!
