Start where the money is.

Hi

This doesn’t get said enough to new freelancers, but if building work/life balance is important to you, well, it’s not something you can do if you’re getting paid next to nothing for your work.

Finding the money doesn’t mean you have to ditch your skill or niche, but it does mean you’ll need to start asking, regularly, “where does the money live?”

I ask that question as much as possible (I’ve started keep anything interesting I find under #NoBrokeNiches on Twitter), because as a freelancer, it’s not enough for us to ask what we enjoy or what we’re good at…we also have to keep an eye out for opportunity.

Try it out yourself…start reading business news and see where you can’t find some intersection that pays.
