Want to freelance? Learn what people need.

Hi

I talk to a lot of people who have a skill, or passion, or service they want to turn it into freelance work. That’s how I started too. It’s a great place to start, but there’s a catch.

Knowing what you want to do (your skillset) will only take you so far. You also need to know who you want to do it for (your niche). The reason that matters is that every niche has different needs.

For example, I’m a writer. In business, case studies are big. In fashion? Blogs sell better. If I decided to try to sell case studies to fashion businesses, I might end up thinking that freelancing didn’t work or that I wasn’t good at it, when the truth would be that I just hadn’t lined my skillset up with niche’s needs yet.

If you don’t understand those needs, you can be left floundering for months, even years, waiting for your freelance career to “catch.”

This workbook will help you push through that challenge and into a freelance career that works for you.  Make sure though, to spend some time paying attention not to just what you do, but to how the organizations you want to work with do business. (You do that by following trade magazines, joining professional organizations, and just…talking to people.)

In the meantime, know that you can find a place in the world of freelancing, you just have to take the time to look.
