Thanks for being a loyal email subscriber. We
appreciate hearing from you. Let us know if you ever have any questions.
Earlier this week I saw someone doing what plenty of us do on Twitter…broadcasting. They were tweeting to “editors”, letting them know their availability. It struck me as strange (at best), because editors have whole email addresses, public calendars, and pitch guidelines to use for anyone who’ll take the time…meaning that they were missing the simplest and most effective way to market their
work in favor of a slim chance.
75% of people who responded (so far. It’s still going on)…that’s the vast majority…hadn’t marketed their services in a week. Now I know…it’s a Twitter
poll. Those can only be so accurate, but you know what? I think all that tells a story about how way too many of us go about our businesses and specifically what keeps those businesses alive…our marketing.
I’m going to tell you something ugly, but only because I want to see your freelance business healthy and contributing to the greatest version of your life…
If you aren’t taking your marketing seriously, you’re wasting your time as a
freelancer.
You won’t be discovered, people won’t find you (no matter how good your work is), and you’ll be limiting to yourself to the clients (predatory ones especially) looking for freelancers who look desperate and not in control of their work.
That’s why consistent marketing is a minimum practice. Treating marketing your business as its own job is the least you owe yourself as a
freelancer.
