Life Without an Employer…in the hospital.

Published: Sun, 10/15/17

Hi

My newest cousin came into the world over the weekend (she’s so cute!) and I gotta say…there’s nothing like going to a hospital to slow everything down and highlight what what really controls your life.

The last time I spent more than a couple of minutes in one was when my father went into kidney failure. This was when I’d just started my freelance business but I was thankful, every second, that I had the freedom to stay there with him for whole days without worrying about getting called back to a desk or work smacking me in the face when I came back.

That flashed through my mind as I sat listening to people talking about getting back to work after spending time with the baby, or taking time off to come see her. And while the struggle parents and family face depends a lot on the country you live in, it still comes from a common place.

Whether we have children or not, employers have a disproportionate amount of control over our lives.

We accept it as ok, but at best its normal. The further away I am from employment, the more true and scary that seems.

I do have hope though, because so many of us have more options to step away…even if not completely, we have the opportunity to create space and find some freedom. These are small steps today, but for those of us who are willing to take them they, they’re going to pay off big in the future.

The question is, are you willing to start laying the seeds right now, or will you wait?
