You’ve probably noticed that I’m not a fan of the state of the employment-employee relationship, but I’m not gonna lie to you. Employment can offer some serious benefits to freelancers.
I know that on a personal level…my employed background is the foundation of my freelance work.
Not only do you get insight into the kind labor and skills businesses actually want to pay for (instead of just guessing based on what you like to do and what you see people talking about on social media). You learn subtle nuances like how organizations work and the day-to-day challenges your contacts and decision-makers are hiring you to make it through. (You might even pull a couple of clients.)
So yeah. I encourage people to get out of employment as soon as possible for themselves, but not before they know enough to get your best freelance career off the ground.
