Do you know it made me a little sick just typing that subject line?
I hate interviews. Hate.
I hate feeling like I’m auditioning…worrying about what questions they’re going to ask...dealing with the visible surprise (or outright admission) when my very Irish-British name turns out to have a very Black body attached to it.
5 years ago when I got laid off I knew I just couldn’t do it anymore, and thankfully, I don’t have to.
You’re probably thinking “Ok yeah, but as a freelancer, aren’t you technically interviewing for every client you work with?”
I’ll say if you are, you’re probably doing something wrong.
The best freelancing is about relationships and partnerships…the kind where everybody’s benefitting and where you can walk away at any time. Those don’t start with an interview, they start with a discussion.
If you do still feel like you’re interviewing for every prospect, it might be time to rethink the value you offer, or maybe even become the interviewer yourself.
