First off let me just let you know that this is NOT an employment tip (I’m not trying to get anybody fired.)
It is though, powerful freelancing advice and something I think everybody should at least think about from day one.
I know it might make you uncomfortable or go against every bit of training you’ve had to “work twice as hard” to make sure you at least get half, but I want to tell you right now…that old school advice was true (and still applies sometimes), but it can also leave you in a mess as a freelancer.
That’s because the freelance habits and mindsets you start with reverberate throughout your whole career. If you start off thinking you have to work more for less,
you’re probably going to gravitate toward that kind of work relationship…forever.
For example, if in year one you decide that you want to make more money and that
the best way to do that is to simply work more hours, you’re probably going to end up doing the same thing in year five, even while you’re sitting in front of amazing opportunity to raise your rates or explore new products and higher-yield services.
Get Your Freelance Mind Right
Aiming to work less isn’t just about having more free time. It’s about training your freelance eyes to look for the highest ROI opportunities and leave behind the
ones that leave you spent, tired, and burnt out.
So this week, tell yourself you’re going to keep an eye out for the easier work. You owe it to your future
freelance self.
