A couple weeks ago I wrote a post on how to get to charging $75 per hour. I wrote that post because I don’t believe in broke freelancing.
I mean that.
If you know me, you know I’m all about balancing income and peace. Not passion, affirmation, trends, or anything else.
Income. Peace.
For all its benefits, freelancing can be risky. It takes work, dedication, and sometimes giving up other opportunities. That’s 100x as true if you’re doing it full time.
I really believe that if you’re not aiming to make enough to cover taxes (which in the U.S. can run 30-40% of what you bring in), business expenses, and all the risks you’re taking as a business owner, you’re likely better off moving your work into the hobby category and/or looking for something more stable.
That might not sound inspirational, but I’ve seen entirely too many broken spirits, crushed egos, and burnt out hearts to think that anything less is worth it.
The great thing is, that at $75/hr, you have more power to make space for passion, peace, and so many other things in life. The second great thing is that even if it sounds high to you, is normal for most of the business world. Make sure you’re not selling yourself (or your career) short.
