You’ve probably heard me say that whether you’re freelancing or employed, you’re working with the same people.
You might be thinking “yeah, that’s obvious Megan, why do you keep saying it?”
…it’s more important than you think.
People pay you because you meet a need. Employed spots are obvious, but freelancing plays by the same rules.
Your freelance career won’t work out just because you’re good, or hard working, or really focused, or passionate, or on the right side of social justice.
This week we watched massive, shocking layoffs from Buzzfeed and other media leaders and the fallout the impact had on individual lives too.
I saw people scrambling for another “safe” job and honestly, it made me a little sad.
I’m glad to see people trying, but the writing’s been on the wall for a while. Digital media is high risk, but if you’re listening closely, so are most jobs. Even the nicest, most charismatic CEO or leader is itching and highly motivated to find a way to need the
least of your support possible.
If you want to build a career that balances income and peace, be ready to walk away from obvious instability and look for the people who need your skills and are willing to pay for it.
