This past week, Contently told all their writers, designers, photographers, and videographers that they would start charging just under 5% for contributors on the platform to cash out their earnings.
Before that, cashing out was free.
It’s a bad look and they’ve left a lot of bitter contributors (and a whole hashtag) in their wake, but here’s the thing — when you hand off the “how” in how you get your clients, you also hand off how you get paid.
I like sites like Upwork, Content, Skyword, Ndash, and others because they’re a great break for freelancers who don’t want to handle their marketing.
That’s good for newbies who are trying to refine a skill or understand a niche, or even hobbyists who don’t care about a 5% pay cut. But if a fee increase is going to put a dent in your finances, it’s probably time to look into handling more of your own marketing.
