A couple of weeks ago I sent out a request for questions to shoot over to the Paychecks and Balances podcast.
You can listen to the episode here…it’s dedicated to taxes, but honestly, it’s so much more than that. They cover the transition to self-employment, when entrepreneurs and self-employed people need to consider hiring tax professionals, even discussing money with your partner.
I want to highlight out one really important point their guest (Rianka Dorsainvil, CFP) brought up, and that’s that every dollar you earn as a freelancer (at least in the U.S.) is really only $.75.
Personally, I look at it as even less. More like $.70 or even $.65.
I love that perspective and wish I’d run into it earlier. It could have saved me some tax drama early on. It would have really made me rethink about those checks that were coming in and get a lot more serious a lot faster about pushing my earning and marketing more consistently.
So what does it mean for you? If you started to look at every article rate, every hourly fee, and every project estimate as only 65% of its face value, what would you change about how you do business? What are you willing to change today?
