If you haven’t run across “FOMO”, it’s not just the latest issue that’s being dropped at the feet of millennials.
It stands for “fear of missing out” and is honestly not new. People have always feared choices not made and experiences not had.
I’ve gotten a little tired of hearing about it, but the other day I was listening to one of Pat Flynn’s podcasts and he put a different twist on it — JOMO…the “Joy of Missing Out”, and it was beautiful.
It doesn’t get said enough, but there’s something great about not experiencing everything. Something inspiring and energizing about choosing or finding a path, and tuning out all the other options so you can focus, learn specific lessons, and apply that knowledge in the future.
I know for me, it’s a relief to not feel the need to tune in to every podcast, read every blog, and follow every social media account. Life is so much easier.
So next time you’re worried about missing out on practicing every skill set and dabbling in every niche, remember that there’s another way and it’s one that you might even find some joy in.
