Shaping the freelance career you want takes a clear perspective and sometimes, twisted thinking gets in the way.
That’s why over the next 3 weeks, we’re going to be talking about some misconceptions that might be keeping you from your best life as a freelancer.
Myth #1: I have time.
OK, so I believe in building your freelance career at the speed that works for you. BlackFreelance is all about balancing profitability and peace and burning yourself out runs completely contradictory to that.
That said…that’s exactly why you shouldn’t wait.
Building a freelance career takes time. If you want to be ready for those inevitable employment bumps and market shifts that come up, you want to get started before they show up.
Also, and this is the big one, freelancing is evolving quickly. I’ve talked about this for a couple years now, but we’re seeing “classes” of freelancers popping up. You don’t want to get stuck slogging through the lower rungs and fighting for a place that faster moving freelancers have already taken.
The third reason, is that it will probably take you longer than you think to get your career going. They say it takes 18 months to 2 years to get rolling and a whole NINE years to feel comfortable. (I’m starting to feel comfort rolling up on year six and feel lucky.)
So yeah. You have time, but you don’t have forever. Little things like niche research and filling out your workbook are a good, low-effort start to get that inertia going.
