Finding a niche that gets you to your goals really is a journey. It can years of refining and trial and error.
But you know I’m all about building a freelance life that brings you more pay and more peace — and that’s why I normally tell people to start their niche journey where they have experience.
You know who has the most to gain by taking that route? Older freelancers.
Focus on a field you have multiple years or even decades of experience in and you have a chance to create a freelance-consultant hybrid career that can pay very well.
I credit the fact that I’ve been able to push into six-figure freelance territory (while still keeping a more relaxed schedule) to one thing — choosing my employed industry over my ‘passion’ (but very broke and exploitative) niche.
Instead of being an outsider looking for a shot, I’m an experienced insider who can charge more for being competent and even being a guide. A
A lot of us out here have the chance to do something really similar, especially in fields like education, healthcare, and government where Black people tend to be concentrated and already have deep networks.
