Freelancers should be taking more vacations.
Grinding through holidays should be rare and something you do at the start of your career at most.
I’m a big believer that if you’re a few years into your career and you’re still worrying about churning out work and chasing down invoices? That’s a red flag. Something’s off in your business. It needs to be addressed.
That’s because vacation as a freelancer is simple (not easy).
Freelancers solve it the same way employers do — you fund your time off. Employers use things like savings and payroll loans to keep money flowing at a regular pace.
I’m not suggesting you take out a business loan, but if you want to take time in 2020? Now’s the time to make the plan.
I just talked a little about this on Twitter, but it’s pretty simple.
Want to take 2 weeks off? Decide how much money you need, add on expenses and how much you need to factor in for taxes, and there’s your sales goal (on top of your normal living expenses).
Put it in a separate account so you don’t touch it until you need it at year end.
Not sure how to get to that number? The answer’s in your marketing and your rates (and possibly rethinking your niche).
