Freelancers should pay attention to employment. (That hurt me a little to say, but it’s true.)
Here’s the thing. As freelancers, we’re building relationships with the exact same organizations as somebody who’s out there tossing out resumes and auditioning for a chance at a job.
The difference is we’re not committed.
That means when we see something like mass layoffs or an industry picking up a new twist on our skill, we can pivot. Things that threaten employment can become opportunities for us.
To pull this off though, we need to be driven by facts. That means news, information we’ve learned in our employed time, and even from the work we see people doing around us.
So what’s employment telling you these days? How can you use that information to refine and optimize your niche? Who can you talk to to learn more and validate what you see?
