So...we’re in the middle of a global pandemic.
For some of us, our lives might not be changed much at all. For others, especially if we’re in hospitality, tourism, and events, our businesses are turned upside down.
Regardless, now is the time to plan.
As freelancers, we don’t have the buffer of an employer’s protection (if they’re even offering it), but we can get ready for uncertain times ourselves.
Freelancers Union has some good basic advice here, but from a business perspective, it’s time to do more.
- Make sure you’re doubling down on your marketing to keep business flowing — whether it’s taking time off if you get sick yourself or have to care for someone else, you might need some cushion in the future.
- If you’re up and running, follow up with existing and past clients to find out how their businesses have changed and how yours can find opportunity to adapt in response. That’s what great freelance relationships look like.
- And whatever stage you’re at, watch your niche. Some of us really will need to consider branching out to keep our businesses healthy. Others in more stable fields might just have to rethink how we meet and connect and reach out more once things settle down.
Either way, if you need to talk anything out, you’ve got a community to help you through it.
