When I first started freelancing, I used to listen to people who’d been doing the work for 10, 20, 30 years and longer…and I’d wonder how they did it.
Yes it was profitable niches. Yes, it was smart pricing. But it was more than that.
Over and over again I heard the topic of long-term relationships come up — clients who came back to “go to” freelancers because they trusted them and knew they could get a project done.
June is Happy Clients month and even if you’re months, or years away from getting your first client, I want you to think about what it takes to become that “go to”.
Most of the same principles that apply to being a good employee (in a healthy, functioning organization) translate very well to building good freelance relationships. Just look at this list of 25 Ways to Make Your Boss Happy. They specifically call out
employer-indie workers and the fact that most of the advice applies to us too.
So if this is what’s worrying you about your successful freelance future, try to worry a bit less. You’re probably better at it than you think.
