Hey!
We’ve been talking about pandemic boundaries over on Twitter, but honestly, boundaries are always make or break for us as freelancers.
…If I hadn’t decided early that I wouldn’t work with startups, I’d probably be frustrated trying to get new teams to slow down.
…If I hadn’t decided that I wasn’t going to work with clients who weren’t meeting my floor rate of $150/hr, I’d probably still be stressed and making less than I was while employed (while trying to cover health insurance, business expenses, and PTO).
…If I hadn’t decided from day 1 that I wanted to work less I’d probably be burnt out worse than I was back in my 9-5 days.
I set those boundaries early and to this day, they’ve been a hedge of protection that’s kept my business growing in a direction that benefits me — instead of flowing with the inertia of the rest of the world that wants to burn me out and extract as much labor as possible for the least money.
This is why your strategy workbook starts with goals and defining a skill set in Phase 1. Goals are one way of setting boundaries. When you lay them down early and with specifics, it’s easier to shape a freelance business that works for you instead of the other way around.
So what boundaries are you setting lately? Come talk it out in the community.
