Every month we run
through a series of questions to help you run your freelance business like a bigger business — “self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life.
Happy Marketing Month!
For June we’re covering how we describe ourselves as freelancers. If you’re uncomfortable doing that at any level, you’ll want to take some time with this month’s exercises.
Being able to get across who you are and why someone should hire you is critical to freelance success and sustainability.
This week, we’re talking about speaking directly to your prospects…so let’s go!
Who are you, freelancer?
Who doesn’t like someone focused on their needs?
From dedicated customer service reps to personal stylists, it’s pretty clear…most people value someone who’s zeroed in on specific needs over a generalist.
When you’re talking about yourself, make sure you get your focus in front of people, as early as possible in the marketing conversation. Here’s an example of how it shows up in my self description:
I’m a healthcare tech writer and content strategist who helps marketing leaders get more value out of their content efforts.
That part about “marketing leaders”? I have it in there because I want people to know, immediately, that I fix problems for people in marketing.
If you’re having a hard time figuring out the title of people who you work with, look at your past clients. If you don’t have many or don’t see patterns, check out some other freelancers who work in your niche (doesn’t have to be your exact skill set in this case). You’ll probably get some hints.
If you want to get some input on your self description? Come by the Academy boards and let’s talk it out!
