Every month we run
through a series of questions to help you run your freelance business like a bigger business — “self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life.
Hey! Happy Production Month!
We’re looking at ourselves as workers, and this week, we’re going to ask whether we’re overworking ourselves.
Think hard about this one, especially if you regularly feel tired, like you can’t take time off, or you’re recovering from burnout.
Are you overworking yourself?
Plenty of employers overwork their employees…honestly, most do. They feel entitled to excessive amounts of their employees’ labor, and usually at a low rate.
They’ll complain about minimum wage and the cost of benefits, but you know what the problem often is?
They haven’t done the work on their business to make sure their revenue model can cover business expenses…and in response, they try to get more labor out of their employees.
And you know what? Freelancers do this too.
Plenty of us are out here barely paying ourselves a living wage, let alone the $75-$100/hr we should be to cover insurance, time off, etc. Instead of moving to a more profitable niche or raising our rates, we try to work more.
And that’s not ok. We should be doing better for ourselves as freelancers, especially if we want to shape a freelance business that improves our lives.
If you want to talk out how to make the changes that mean you can pay yourself better? Come by the Academy boards and let’s talk it out!
