Every month we run through a series of questions to help you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life. You can view a condensed version of this month’s coaching prompts here.
"The riches are in the niches.”
That’s one of those freelance sayings that really holds true. I’ve personally used niching down to boost my earning and know a ton of other freelancers who’ve done the same. (I’m actually on another round of going even deeper right now.)
...but how do you know when it’s a good time to take your specialization to the next level?
This month’s self-coaching questions are going to help you answer just that.
#4 Do you see other people specializing the same way?
You know I’m big on looking to your market to validate your choices as a freelancer, and niching down is no different.
If you’re wondering if a specialization is worth pursuing, look and see if anybody else has taken the step first.
For example, for me, it was pretty easy to make the move to focus on hospitals, because the majority of the vendors I was working with specifically mentioned hospitals on their websites.
On the flip side, if you don’t see anybody else taking a particular slant, you might want to think twice before you make a move.
