Hey!
As much as I believe in the power of content marketing, it can’t do everything.
Content marketing needs to be an outgrowth
of strategic business plans...even great content can’t make up for a lack of direction.
That’s why this month we’re going to be covering issues content marketing can’t fix...and what you should be doing
instead.
A niche that doesn’t make sense
There’s a reason I push everybody to use sites like the BLS to pick a niche...and then to use regular conversations with other freelancers to confirm their focus.
Left to our own devices, let’s just say we can get a little...creative with how we set up our niches.
For a minute in my business I wanted to focus on companies in healthcare that were using Salesforce, but that honestly doesn’t make a ton of sense. Yes, they exist, but do they see themselves
that way? Is it a permanent state? Do they even like using the platform?
The answer to all of those is...”generally...no.” And that means, for me? It’s not a reasonable choice for a niche.
Fixing this one isn’t something you can do on your own, and honestly, the opportunity cost of trial and error is just too high.
Listen to your clients, other freelancers who are where you want to go, and the validation
of employer choices.
