One Friday a month we look at financial tips and advice for freelancers. (They’re slanted toward the US, so if you’d like to see or share insights from another perspective, just reply to this email!)
A couple months ago I had a client who always pays within a couple of days, lagging weeks behind on a $6K invoice.
I shot a couple emails over and got no response.
After tapping a couple other contacts in the company (it’s aways good to keep more than one) I found out their operating account had been completely drained after somebody hacked their payroll.
Thankfully, I keep enough of a cushion so that I could take that kind of blow to my cash flows, but the whole thing was a reminder that I’m vulnerable to the same threat.
All of a sudden those ads I’d been getting from Amex for a business line of credit started to look real attractive...and this time I took them up on it. (Not an endorsement)
Honestly, this is one of the nice things about getting a business credit card early...having a history with a company generally makes this kind of thing easier (though they do tend to factor in credit scores.)
