Market Insights: Freelance red flags

The responses to this tweet on red flags that keep clients from moving forward has a ton of great info. Here are my (easily fixable) faves:

Too many services
Bad mouthing past clients or employers
Not asking questions
No portfolio
No website
Responding to the rate question with “what’s your budget”? (This is why I put ranges on my site...establish trust early)

Share Your Progress!

Don’t forget to post your progress on the boards! (Mine’s up here.)

Here’s an easy template to use:

Goal progress: This can be financial, number of clients, or anything you like. If you aren’t comfortable sharing numbers, keep it vague like me with a %.

Most effective marketing tactic: Share what’s working for you and learn from everyone else!

Lifestyle status: How well is your freelance strategy supporting your lifestyle goals...a few words is fine!

Niche update: What’s going on in your corner of the freelance world...let us know!

Job Updates

Here’s what I’m seeing on some of the main job boards! Even if you don’t see something interesting in this email, make sure to click through and search for your keywords. (Also check out the Where to Find Work page for new and classic ideas to find freelance work…remember that these sites should just be a starting point!)

Upwork: Upwork’s got work for Shopify API creation, marketing automation, and pitch deck creation.

Don’t forget that these are just highlights to inspire your searches! (I haven’t dug into the details or quality of any of the jobs) Check out all the sites yourself — and as always, these updates might be great, but this shouldn’t be your primary source of work. Get out there are get your prospecting game going!
