Every month we run through a series of questions to help you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life. You can view a condensed version of this month’s coaching prompts here.
"The riches are in the niches.”
That’s one of those freelance sayings that really holds true. I’ve personally used niching down to boost my earning and know a ton of other freelancers who’ve done the same. (I’m actually on another round of going even deeper right now.)
...but how do you know when it’s a good time to take your specialization to the next level?
This month’s self-coaching questions are going to help you answer just that.
#2 Am I getting great results in one area?
Back when I first started freelancing, I’d work with anybody in healthcare tech.
Eventually though, I realized I was getting better results for established businesses (plus I liked them more)...so I dropped startups and focused there.
If you look at your freelance wins and realize your best outcomes are focused on one kind of client, that might be a sign to specialize.
Remember though, you can focus in a bunch of different ways. It might be org size, region/country, desired outcome, or even the type of platform they use (e.g. Salesforce or Shopify).
So take some time to look for a common thread between your best stories. (And don’t forgt to raise those rates if you do niche down.)
