Friday a month we look at financial tips and advice for freelancers. (They’re slanted toward the US, so if you’d like to see or share insights from another perspective, just reply to this email!)
I was just talking
to someone on Twitter about how I have a S-corp for my freelance business, and I’m set up so I’m technically an employee. It’s got a lot of benefits, but one of the major ones is that my taxes get paid monthly.
I’m not thinking about quarterly payments, massive checks going to the IRS, or catching up at the end of the year. But I didn’t need an S-corp to do that.
Even when I just had an LLC on its own, I set up monthly payments to the IRS, and I recommend all freelancers do the same. Even if it’s only a few dollars while cash is tight, get in the habit.
We’ve got enough to worry about. Simplify wherever you can.
P.S. If you’ve got any questions on a financial topic, just reply to this email and I’ll see if I can’t help you out.
