One Friday a month we look at financial tips and advice for freelancers. (They’re slanted toward the US, so if you’d like to see or share insights from another perspective, just reply to this email!)
Hey!
An accountant can be a game changer in your freelance business. They’re a massive headache saver in doing your taxes, give great advice on making bookkeeping easier,
and they’re really useful in deciding whether you should employ yourself.
The hard part is finding the right one. I went a couple routes before I landed on mine. Here’s what I learned…
Referrals are great, but keep your mind open.
My
first recommendation was a referral. They were supposedly wonderful but never returned any of my messages and eventually flaked on the person who referred me to them. Be ready to have to do some sifting even with a recommendation.
Look local if you want to sit down with someone.
I started my search with local accountants. We interviewed virtually, and unfortunately, I didn’t vibe with anybody I talked to. (One guy really seemed to just like
lecturing people about not saving enough in their business.) Ultimately, I decided that my feeling comfortable was more important than being able to walk into an office.
Consider a specialist
What eventually worked for me was searching online for an accountant who specialized in freelancers. I found one who’s been ridiculously helpful, publishes great content, and integrates with the software I use to run my business (Gusto and Xero…which he
recommended for bookkeeping)
Choosing an accountant can be as personal a decision as choosing a doctor. Do your research, look for a professional with good recommendations, and ultimately, trust your gut.
