Hey!
So first, I have to apologize. November's getting off to a late start because I magically came down with a nasty case of food poisoning last week.
I'm finally coming out of it (kimchi is saving my digestion), but as soon as it hit, it was an instant reminder of some basic principles in lifestyle-centered freelancing. I didn't feel worry or pressure around missing work, even as a 1-person business. (Not a lot of freelancers can say that.) That's for a few reasons that you should try applying in your business.
Work with people who understand your lifestyle
I prioritize health in my freelance business, so one thing I wasn't going to do was over exert myself, even once I started feeling better. Thankfully, all my clients understand that I'm not around to jump into action when called and sometimes need to take time for my health. (Most even extend that privilege to
their employees.)
Communicate early
As soon as I could drag myself to a computer again, I sent out an email and let them know that I'd been down a day. They were thankful and spread the word internally.
Manage expectations and be open about vulnerability
I'm still moving slowly...brain included, so a bunch of my work is falling behind—so I was honest about that. No need to have people thinking I'm superwoman or a robot and never get sick. (It's easy for people to think that about remote vendors to be honest.) They now know things are
going to be a bit delayed, and that takes stress off me because I don't feel like I have to scramble to catch up.
I'll be getting us caught up over the next week or so...so thanks for understanding!
