Every month we run through a series of questions to help
you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life.
Hey!
As we close out 2025, we’re digging into a topic that can be kind of tricky for freelancers…one that can take time to figure out…and that’s positioning.
It’s a concept that mostly comes up in relation to larger businesses, but it absolutely applies to freelancers too…and it can get you over a lot of the hurdles that frustrate us and slow down our growth.
Positioning is an exercise that takes some experimenting, but starts with a lot of reflection. So we’re going to run through it from now through January so you have room to reflect, ask questions, and
think of ways to start trying out your own positioning thoughts in 2026.
Why positioning matters for freelancers
There are a million freelancers out there for clients to choose from. With AI, the options are even more extensive.
Nobody has time or resources to waste on hundreds of test
projects, so they use other criteria—often price. And that’s what’s so great about positioning…especially if you don’t want to compete with freelance mills and extremely low cost AI options.
Positioning tells people in an instant why you:
- Offer more value
- Provider higher quality results
- Are more aligned with their problems
- Stand out as a superior
choice to competitors and alternatives
This is the last message for 2025 until mid-January so happy holidays! But while you’re out buying (and receiving) gifts, going to restaurants, and making travel choices, I want you to reflect on the brands you run across, how you feel about them, and most importantly. why you have those feelings and where they might have come from (Ads? Slogans? Images?).
Enjoy your holidays, give yourself time off, get some rest, and we’ll talk soon!
