Every month we run through a series of questions to help
you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life.
If I haven’t said it yet…Happy New Year!
As we close out 2025, we’re digging into a topic that can be kind of tricky for freelancers…one that can take time to figure out…and that’s positioning.
It’s a concept that mostly comes up in relation to larger businesses, but it absolutely applies to freelancers too…and it can get you over a lot of the hurdles that frustrate us and slow down our growth.
Positioning is an exercise that takes some experimenting, but starts with a lot of reflection. So we’re going to run through it from now through January so you have
room to reflect, ask questions, and think of ways to start trying out your own positioning thoughts in 2026.
Now is the time to rethink your positioning…
Since we ended 2025 thinking about positioning, we’re going to kick off 2026 with some application.
We’re going through a time of immense change…a great opportunity to switch things up and shift how you present your freelance business to the world.
The first step? Is detaching a little from what things look like now and opening yourself up to the possibility of something new.
Maybe you’ve kept your prices low and are
scared to raise them by positioning on value.
Maybe you underestimate just how good you are (or overestimate how good everybody else is) and shy away from positioning on quality.
Maybe you’re still thinking with an employment mindset and are overvaluing being a generalist…so you’re avoiding positioning on a really targeted niche.
So we’re going to start 2026 with loosening our grip on the way our business looks right now…and move forward on positioning that’s updated for the challenges we’re facing today.
