Every month we run through a series of questions to help
you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life.
Hey!
As we close out 2025, we’re digging into a topic that can be kind of tricky for freelancers…one that can take time to figure out…and that’s positioning.
It’s a concept that mostly comes up in relation to larger businesses, but it absolutely applies to freelancers too…and it can get you over a lot of the hurdles that frustrate us and slow down our growth.
Positioning is an exercise that takes some experimenting, but starts with a lot of reflection. So we’re going to run through it from now through January so you have room to reflect, ask questions, and
think of ways to start trying out your own positioning thoughts in 2026.
How to start testing new positioning
Since positioning can be used to address multiple issues, a good place to start trying things out is in addressing your biggest challenges.
If your competition is stiff, look
for ways to set yourself apart (I position myself as an option to use before agencies because they’re an alternative in my market’s mind)
If you often hear you’re too expensive, try positioning that focuses on value and positive ROI.
If you’re facing competition from AI, take it on directly, with statements that highlight AI’s weaknesses or negative
outcomes.
Positioning statements can come in a lot of forms, so don’t get too hung up on that right now. For now, just explore for concepts that address your most pressing business challenges.
