Every month we run through a series of questions to help
you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life.
Hey!
As we close out 2025, we’re digging into a topic that can be kind of tricky for freelancers…one that can take time to figure out…and that’s positioning.
It’s a concept that mostly comes up in relation to larger businesses, but it absolutely applies to freelancers too…and it can get you over a lot of the hurdles that frustrate us and slow down our growth.
Positioning is an exercise that takes some experimenting, but starts with a lot of reflection. So we’re going to run through it from now through January so you have room to reflect, ask questions, and
think of ways to start trying out your own positioning thoughts in 2026.
Work on your positioning statement
This week, we’re going to practice a few statements.
They should be short and speak the language of your market.
You know how I talk about the importance of emulating other freelancers that are similar to you? This is where it comes in handy. There’s no need to start from scratch here if you don’t have to.
I’m going to share my positioning
statement, which may or may not be helpful depending on your skill set and niche.
Before you commit to an agency, invest in an FTE, or embark on an ABM or AI initiative...you work with me.
So this one’s taken me YEARS to come up with. I just launched it about 6 months ago and I’m starting to see it resonate (prospects repeating my logic back to me and explaining
the value I offer unprompted in discovery calls).
The reason I chose it is because, after a few client interviews, I learned that they were working with agencies and direct hires as an alternative…and that’s not where I wanted to be. I wanted to be something they saw as critical before making those decisions.
But don’t just stop with mine.
Look at other freelancers who have something in common with you…and see if you can’t figure out their positioning and pull a good starting point from it.
