So we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, facing the next phase of fascism, and walking into a new flavor of racism emerging in the West. I’m always about working the way we want, but now? A lot of us need that more than ever.
Thing is, it’s really hard to do...if you aren’t clear, REALLY clear about what that looks like.
Setting Your Personal Production Schedule
Yesterday I was talking with a freelance associate about when to say no to more work.
She told me she’s usually working 60 hours a week, so she has time to spend with her kids. Me, not a parent, cap mine at 30, because that’s how I want to live my life. I know someone else who only works 8 months out of the year while I work 10.
Whether you want to work 20 hours or 80 hours a week, that’s where you have to start building your schedule. I want space to work at a moderate pace, have leisurely mornings, garden, and work out regularly. You might want something different, like only working 3 days a week.
Doing things like this? Is the opposite of how most of us were raised...cramming as much productivity as possible into the hours employers say we should work.
And that’s why it’s such a hard mental shift to make. Starting with yourself when it comes to work is practically revolutionary.
So this week I want you to start with your ideal schedule, both in time worked and money earned, and start thinking out what that looks like in terms of a day, a week, a month, and a year.
If you’re like me, it might push you to start focusing on higher-paying services. It might make you realize you can take some time to work less if you spend more time on production. It might make you realize you're good where you are.
Whatever it is, focus on what makes you feel best and what gives you emotional space right now. We all need a little bit more of that.
