This week we’re going to cover what might be the most important topic for Production Month...load.
In some spaces this might not even come up...so many people these days just want us to keep grinding without any kind of question or critique. But that’s not how we operate here.
You’re here because you want to shape a business that improves your life, so we’re going to talk about just how busy you should (or shouldn’t) be.
Deciding On Your Production Load
So this is a simple question, but it’s probably one that’s going to take you a while to answer. Some people work for years and never get it down.
How busy do you want to be?
The reason it’s important to answer that in a clear, personal way, is that if you don’t? Well, most of us just default to the level that work, school, and other responsibilities dictate for us. Most of us will just get swept away with the current of life.
As an example...if you’ve been working for 15 years at 50-60 hours a week, you’re comfortable. That’s where you’re unconsciously going to let your freelance business take you. But I’ll tell you from experience...those employment habits won’t get you to the life you want to build through freelancing. They’ll probably just drag you out to a riskier, more
intense version of your employed life.
That’s why it’s so important to be clear when answering this.
Is your answer 20 hours a week? 40? 10? Think about how much of your life you want work to take up and start from there. Name a number. Write it down and post it on your wall. Program it into your calendar and scheduling tools (a lot will specifically ask you this question). And stick to it. I set alarms to stop working. You’ll probably have your own ways of
setting boundaries. Whatever you do, respect your vision and just see where it takes you.
