New Month!...You Deserve Great Freelance Clients

Published: Sun, 11/01/15

Hi

OK…so that subject line was kinda click-baity.

What I mean is that there’s no reason your freelance clients shouldn’t be as good as anyone else’s.

Last week I was listening to an interview with a writer who made $500/hr. I knew this going in and expected her to be writing on cutting-edge tech or high end luxury travel, but nope. She was pulling in that kind of income writing on the Kardashians and other TMZ-type fluff.

My mind was blown for a second…I know so many quality freelance writers who would give a finger or two for that kind of income…how was this woman pulling in an income well into the six-figure range writing on topics I intentionally ignore standing in line to buy chicken fingers?

This is what was going on…she pulled a lot of her clients through networking (she’s a young, thin, attractive White woman) and people just passing her name around, but part of the reason she makes what she does is also tied to the kind of work she’s doing — gossip moves dollars and that’s something none of us can ignore.

This month is Getting Clients month at BlackFreelance, and by the end of November, you can be focused and on your way to getting great new clients who pay what you’re worth too. We’re going to be covering a lot of topics around client acquisition, and one of them is going to be getting higher-paying clients. You can read more about Getting Clients this November here.

New On BlackFreelance
Let’s start with the basics.

Whether you’ve never had a client or have been at it a while, this post on getting your first client will be a good read. Signing new clients is about getting the basics down and we all need a review sometimes. Come on by and if you have any tips for your own industry, feel free to leave them in the comments (our newer readers will find them helpful).

On another note, we’re going to be featuring stories of how people got their first client, so if you’d like to share yours, just shoot it over and you’ll be featured! (If you want to stay anonymous, just let me know.)

Goals
Website month has passed and we’re seeing some great progress!

I personally got two solid inbound leads (to go along with my pretty new fonts…thanks again Brittany!), one of which was an agency looking for a long-term team-member who told me they’d been watching my web-presence for 6 months — Take care of your site, you never know who’s watching.

We’ve also seen some nice site changes and other work in the forums. If you’ve been working along and want to share what you did in October, come on by the forums and share your update. (No worries if you missed website month…it’ll roll back around.)

While you’re there, remember that we’re kicking off November’s goals too…Personally I’m going to be creating a plan to follow up on leads, but here are some other goals that might work for you:

  • Getting your first client
  • Contacting people in your life who can connect you with clients
  • Doubling your rates (totally possible…I did it and it worked beautifully)
  • Examining and documenting your conversion process
  • Applying to your first job on a bidding site
  • Researching and creating a list of potential customers
  • Developing a repeatable marketing plan
  • Signing a new, high-dollar client by the end of November

Remember…it doesn’t have to be huge or complex…anything that moves you a step farther down your freelancing journey is great. Whenever you want to share, come post yours here.
