BlackFreelance: Website month is going strong and Services pages are looking better…

Published: Mon, 10/12/15

Good morning

When was the last time you updated your Services page? If you’re anything like me, it’s been ENTIRELY too long.

I finally sat down this week to look at mine and I was embarrassed by what I saw…the text was hard to read, I had a mash-up of packages, consulting options, and piece-based services, and the whole page just looked generally messy. If I were a client, it’s highly likely that I would have been convinced not to work with me just because of this page.

So I sat back, did some research, evaluated it, and gave myself some advice. I put that advice and information in this post on creating a Services page that actually works in your favor. Take 5 minutes to read it and ask yourself what you can improve on your own page.

New On BlackFreelance
When I first started freelancing, my sleep schedule was a WRECK. I was staying up late, sleeping in, napping too long or not at all…it was a mess.

I was talking about the issue with My Creative Connection (a community for Black creatives) on Twitter and they asked me if I’d put my thoughts together in a post so…here it is! Sleep And The Independent Worker…How I Found My Peace. Give it a read if you’re having a hard time creating a sustainable rest schedule that keeps you going from week to week.

Goals
Everybody’s in full swing on their goals and I’m happy to say we’re seeing some results!

I finally got my goals posted (yay new fonts!) my site metrics have started to move in an upward direction We’ve also got people changing their site content so it reflects the niche they’ve decided to focus on and people are checking off their goals already.

If you haven’t had a chance to post your goals, we’ve still got lots of time, so come on by and visit. Even if you’re not ready to post, come ask a question or just lend some encouragement…we can all use it!

Job Opening
Mario Armstrong Media is searching for a Content Manager to join their team ASAP!

You’ll need strong interview skills and the ability to work from home/independently. This is a freelance position. I can’t vouch for the position, but you can apply at Media Bistro.

Recommendations
Breaking into a niche can be challenging, but it’s very, very possible. I ran into this podcast this week on a writer who specializes in medical device content. He had a bit of a leg up, but take some time to listen for some really good insight on tuning into a niche and how to be flexible as you find where you fit in. The episode is dedicated to high-income freelance writing, so writer-folk especially, you’ll want to check this one out.
