How Upselling Can Make Your Clients’ Lives Better

Published: Mon, 12/21/15

Hi

I went to my first UFC over the weekend and it was a LOT more fun than I expected.

I’ve never been a huge cage fighting fan, but a friend was on the card and I figured if I was ever going to go, this was the time.

I didn’t really know what to expect, but what I got was an experience that fully immersed me in the UFC brand with music, sounds, informational videos, and perhaps the most important…their upsells which amounted to a chance to UFC-branded material and services.

They already had my money, but if I wanted, I could go home with everything from a t-shirt to a realistic championship belt (for just $450). While I honestly felt cheated after buying a $5 bottle of water, I imagine going home with a t-shirt or subscription to UFC Fight Pass would have just made the experience more memorable and reminded me what I was a fan in the first place.

Here’s the thing…your freelance clients come to you to solve a problem, and problems usually don’t exist in a vacuum. A need to maintain a blog is probably connected to a need to create press releases. A need to build a landing page is probably tied to a similar need for other products or services. This connection is where selling more of your services is actually the same thing as asking whether your clients are having any other issues they’re having problems with, and if they trust you, that’s a question most clients are happy to answer.
