Gig Notice: Police Brutality Website

Published: Wed, 12/23/15

Hi

I ran across this opportunity on Twitter. Work can be done remotely and is unpaid, but it may be a good portfolio builder depending on your stage in freelancing and focus area.

My name is Olivia. For my Master’s thesis project, I created a website that was intended to document incidents of police brutality against unarmed African Americans between 1979 and 2014. ...The initial iteration of the website takes data relating to 158 African American victims of police brutality and displays it by using various data visualizations. Currently, the project has plans to further expand to include photographs and narrative of victims directly from their families. I...What I am currently seeking is a team that can assist me in expanding the project. This includes data collectors, web developers, UX designers, a coalition of individuals who can be consulted on a variety of topics relating to police brutality (ie. historians, professors, archivists, librarians, etc.), and anyone who is passionate about this topic. I am also particularly interested in working with other African American technologists, since we are already so underrepresented in the tech industry. Together, we will work together to see where we can take this project.

The most difficult parts of this project as it stands right now are: 1) figuring out how to get in touch with victims’ families and 2) determining if the project should continue to go in a data visualization direction or serve more as a memorial to these African American victims.
